16 Minute Tai Chi Man

It’s taken sixteen weeks but I’ve gradually built up my standing ’embrace the tree posture’ to sixteen minutes.

And I haven’t had any major problems with my knees reacting against the stance. Apart from some minor soreness, the knees feel fine.

In the past I’ve tried to work through pain and practice  lower stances which actually stressed my knees and caused pain. A silly attitude because it wasn’t in line with the Yin Yang philosophy of finding one’s balance. It took me a while to wake up to my self and focus on only doing exercises I could physically handle.

Hand Form: Self Defence Applications

Just finished my afternoon Tai Chi workout out in the garden. I practiced the hand form and have added a new segment to reinforce the self defence applications in the form.

Some people suggest you practice the form and imagine using the self defence applications as you do each posture. I’ve never found that helpful because the movements in the form use larger circles and extended postures which are not useful for practical self defence.

I prefer to separate form work from realistic self defence applications and here’s how I do it;

  • After the hand form I practice the self defence techniques of each of the 37 postures as if I’m facing an opponent i.e. small circles and natural postures
  • The applications are performed at medium pace
  • Practice in a sequential manner i.e. Opening Posture, Seven Stars, Grasping the Bird’s Tail, Single Whip etc. I have a sheet of paper on the ground in front of me as a guideline to make sure I cover all the postures
  • I only do one repetition of each technique, both sides of the body, as I have a more intensive workout during the week practicing these same self defence techniques. The one repetition is more of a reminder than a workout

As there are more than one self defence application from each of the 37 postures; my session almost feels like another form but only with a realistic edge to it. Well, as much as a realistic edge as you can get without training with a partner.

The extra segment to my training is a good way of reinforcing the idea that every movement in the Tai Chi form has a self defence application.

And having this perspective helps the form ‘come alive’.

Tai Chi Perfect Score

Since I’ve created a detailed schedule, on paper, of my Tai Chi training sessions I have achieved several perfect scores.

My schedule has an outline of all my sessions for the week – from Monday to Saturday. Besides each session is a box I tick when I’ve completed that particular session. And when every box is ticked for the week that’s my Tai Chi perfect score.

My sessions are spread throughout the day which makes it easier for my knees and a welcome energiser when I’m working from home.

The differences between my previous schedule and my new schedule;

  • easier to track my progress
  • a good psychological boost when I tick the boxes, particularly when I achieve a perfect score
  • more detailed
  • at a glance it’s easier to rearrange my schedule if needed

Here’s how I organised my new schedule;

  • worked out what I could realisticly handle over a week
  • prioritised important sessions
  • shorter sessions throughout the day so my knees could cope
  • incorporated a review sessions and a new skills session
  • Alternated intensive and less intensive sessions e.g weapons practice one day followed by forms practice the next day
  • have Sunday off as a rest day

The result?

I now have a more systemised approach to training which I’m constantly reviewing and fine tuning. I’ve been able to strengthen my knees which has been a major achievement.

And I feel I’m making more progress.

Perfect!

Small Space Tai Chi

Yesterday it was raining and muddy outside so I couldn’t go into the garden to practice my Tai Chi weapon’s forms as usual.

So the options were either miss training or improvise and train inside my house. Well, I wasn’t going to miss training so I decided to practice these forms in my hallway. I cleared the furniture and created some space.

In a narrow space I had to shuffle my feet back to the centre of the room several times as I did the form. The difficulty was to stay focused and keep the correct shape of each posture.

And also not to take out the overhead light with my Tai Chi weapon!

Although this is not the ideal way of  training it does  keep me to my schedule.

Winter has come early here with many wet days and training inside the house is the only option for me.

It really is a simple choice.

Practice or don’t practice.
