Tai Chi: Standing Forever

I really should use my mobile phone stop watch instead of my small, old, electronic kitchen clock when I’m training.

This morning I got up early as usual to practice my embrace the tree posture, set my kitchen clock to count down from 20 minutes to zero. I pressed the start button and checked to see if it was working and stepped back into the posture.

When practicing Tai Chi stances make sure the upper body gently lifts from the tan tien and stays in position (don’t collapse).

Tai Chi: The Day When Time Stood Still

I set my small electronic clock to count down from 8 minutes, pressed the start button, and stepped back into my ’embrace the tree posture’.

I relaxed into my posture and thought time would go quick as this was my 8 minute session as compared to the normal 20 minute sessions I do on alternative days.

Tai Chi On The Run

Things are getting very busy here so it’s difficult to fit in my Tai Chi training during the day.

When I’m working in my home office I can regulate my 3 sessions of training throughout the day but out on the road I have to find the time to practice my Tai Chi.

I may have Chair Chi sessions for aged care centres or wellbeing programs for primary, secondary students or major assignments in facilitation and training which I run with Sue James my business partner in BJ Seminars International; sometimes it involves interstate and the occassional trip overseas.

Embrace the Tree: Cardiovascular Workout?

Can you get a cardiovascular workout from just standing still?

Well, recently I experimented with the basic Embrace the Tree posture which involves standing with your feet about shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent and holding both arms out in front of your chest, forming a circle.

As a rough guide I used the following generally accepted formula:

  • 220 – age = maximum heart rate (beats per minute)
  •  60-85% of the maximum heart rate = an ideal zone for a effective workout
