Tai Chi Balance on One Leg

During my various forms practice I’ve been focusing on keeping my balance while standing on one leg.

As I raise one leg I imagine a line shooting through my supporting leg and foot deep into the ground. This visualisation helps anchor my leg thereby maintaining my balance.

Embrace the Tree: Cardiovascular Workout?

Can you get a cardiovascular workout from just standing still?

Well, recently I experimented with the basic Embrace the Tree posture which involves standing with your feet about shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent and holding both arms out in front of your chest, forming a circle.

As a rough guide I used the following generally accepted formula:

  • 220 – age = maximum heart rate (beats per minute)
  •  60-85% of the maximum heart rate = an ideal zone for a effective workout

Chair Chi Sleeper

Well, I’ve done it again.

I’ve put another staff member to sleep who was watching a Chair Chi session I ran for an aged care center today.

As I was working with a group of elderly residents I noticed the staff member sitting nearby start to drift off to sleep. He was watching the gentle hypnotic Chi movements we were practicing and kept nodding off.

Push Hands in the Park – December

Come along and join a friendly group for a free Push Hands session in the park.

Details

  • Sunday December 1
  • 10.00am-12 noon
  • Fawkner Park – South Yarra (Armadale Road entrance), Melbourne, Australia
  • Friendly, non-competitive push hands (tui shou) practice and play for anyone – old, young, beginners, masters
  • Team up with someone and discuss what you’d like to do – and what you’d not like to do!
  • Ten minute exchanges timed by a bell – but you can rest as well!
  •  Learn, share and enjoy

I always enjoy the Push Hands meet ups and I hope to be there this week.
