Aged Care: Chi and Parkinson’s Disease

By Chris 2 Comments

ElderlySI had a very interesting conversation with a resident at an aged care centre during my Chair Chi workshop recently.

He said the 3 key Tai Chi techinques I teach helps him with his Parkinson’s disease. As I told him and others in the group, what I teach doesn’t cure but it helps. And he agreed.

No matter what Chi exercise I teach, I constantly emphasise that what I teach is not a cure but can help you feel better physically, emotionally and pyschologically. And when I ask residents (which includes high care residents) how they feel after a session, they usually say they feel much better.

Even those with Parkinson’s disease.

December: Push Hands in the Park

By Chris Leave a Comment

Push Hands 3aIt’s been awhile since I’ve attended the Push Hands in Park session and I’m looking forward to going this Sunday.

I’ve been extremely busy with the business and there was an overseas trip too that left no time to attend the monthly Push Hands session. I always enjoy going because I learn from experienced and talented Tai Chi players.

If you’re interested in attending this regular free session here are the details:

When: Sunday – December 7th

Time: 10.00 am – 12 noon

Where: Fawkner Park – South Yarra (Armadale Road entrance), Melbourne, Australia

Friendly, non-competitive push hands (tui shou) practice and play for anyone – old, young, beginners, masters.

Team up with someone and discuss what you’d like to do – and what you’d not like to do!

Ten minute exchanges timed by a bell – but you can rest as well!

Learn, share and enjoy.

All welcomed.

Tai Chi Stance: What Goes Up Must Go Down

By Chris Leave a Comment

When I practice my embrace the tree stance each morning I find there is a tendency to rise up slightly from the posture, especially when I’m nearing the end of my workout.

When this occurs I focus my Chi sinking vertically into the ground, starting from my Tan Tien, coccyx (tail bone), knees, bubbling wells in the soles of my feet and into the earth.

I co-ordinate this visualisation process as I slowly exhale.

This technique helps me to stay in the correct posture for the duration of the workout.

Small Space Tai Chi

By Chris Leave a Comment

There’s not much room  in my place at the moment to practice Tai Chi as I’m painting kitchen cupboards and there’s stuff everywhere including my living room.

So early this morning I did my ’embrace the tree posture’ stance  in my office and later on a Chair Chi session in my bedroom.

So you can practice Tai Chi in small places but I don’t think I’ll practice the spear form indoors today. 🙂
